Island resort or city hotel? How to split a Kota Kinabalu trip
Most people try to do both. The order and the split matter more than the hotel names.
Why not just stay on the island
The island resorts in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park are ten to twenty minutes from the city by boat, but they run on boat timetables. Once the last scheduled boat leaves the jetty in the early evening, you're on the island until morning. That's the point of them, and it's also why they make a poor base for Gaya Street, the markets, the Kinabalu climb or an early flight.
Why not just stay in the city
Because you can do the islands as day trips from Jesselton Point, and many people do. But a day trip means the busiest hours on the busiest beaches. Staying overnight on Manukan or Gaya Island gives you the beach after four o'clock, when the day boats have gone, which is a different island.
The splits that work
Three nights
All three in the city centre, walkable to Jesselton Point, with one island day trip. Not enough time to move.
Five nights
Two nights on an island, then three in the city. Island first: you arrive rested, and the city end gives you a buffer for the flight. If you're climbing Kinabalu, reverse it: climb from the city, recover on the island.
Seven nights
Two on an island, two in the city, then head out: Kinabalu, or fly to Sandakan for Sepilok and the Kinabatangan. Trying to add a north-coast resort like Rasa Ria as a third base in a week is a lot of packing for little gain; pick either the island or the north coast.
Which island resort

Pick one walkable to Jesselton Point so the transfer day is a walk, not a taxi: this list. The Hyatt Regency, Hyatt Centric, Grandis and Gaya Centre are all within a few minutes of the jetty at different prices.
