Kota Kinabalu airport to your hotel: Grab, taxi, shuttle or pickup
KKIA is close to everything, so the transfer is cheap and quick. The only real question is what to do after eleven at night.
How close is it
Kota Kinabalu International Airport is a single terminal about 8 km south of the city centre. Most city hotels are 12 to 20 minutes away; Tanjung Aru and Sutera Harbour are under 10; the Tuaran coast and Karambunai are 40 minutes or more. Every hotel ranked by drive time.
Grab and e-hailing
The default. Grab and other e-hailing apps pick up from a marked point outside arrivals. Fares to the city centre are low (typically well under the price of a coffee in many countries), and there is rarely a wait during the day. Get the app and a local SIM or roaming before you land; airport Wi-Fi is enough to book.
Airport taxi coupons
Fixed-fare taxi coupons are sold at a counter in arrivals, priced by zone. Slightly more than Grab, no app needed, and they run around the clock. Useful if you land late or with a large group and luggage.
Hotel shuttles
A handful of hotels run their own: the list. Nearly all are scheduled or on request, not on demand, and the free ones (Eminent, Goldenhill, Stanton) want your flight details in advance. The big city hotels either don't run one or charge for a car; ask before assuming.
Arranged pickup
A driver with a name board, booked with the hotel through us. Costs more than Grab, worth it for a late flight, a family with car seats, or anywhere outside the city. For the island resorts, the pickup takes you to the jetty, not the hotel; see jetty logistics.
The late-night arrival
Flights from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore land after 11pm. Grab still works but the wait grows, and hotels with no night porter or apartments with self check-in become a problem. If you're landing after ten: pick a hotel with a 24-hour desk (every hotel on this site with a front desk states it), skip serviced apartments for the first night, and consider a pre-booked driver so someone is waiting.
Leaving
Allow 30 minutes door to door from the city centre, more at 7 to 9am and 5 to 7pm. Grab to the airport is straightforward; the hotel can also book a taxi. For a 6am flight from an island resort, you will need a private boat, so tell us the flight time when booking.
