When to book a Kota Kinabalu hotel, and how far ahead

The short version

• City hotels: a few days ahead is usually fine, except on the dates below
• Island resorts: two to eight weeks, longer for plunge-pool villas and public holidays
• Mount Kinabalu climb: the permit and mountain hut decide everything, and they go months ahead in peak season

Dates when the city does sell out

Chinese New Year (late January or February) is the busiest week of the year for Sabah: domestic and regional travel peaks, flights fill first, then anything with a pool. Hari Raya Aidilfitri brings a wave of Malaysian family travel and the Tanjung Aru and Sutera resorts fill. Malaysian school holidays, especially the long year-end break from mid-November through early January, push up rates at family hotels. Long weekends around public holidays sell out the airport-side and resort hotels with Sabahan staycationers. The Kaamatan harvest festival at the end of May fills the city with locals and visitors.

December to February is also the busiest season for international visitors and the driest in the west of Sabah, so it's high season on both counts.

The mountain

Climbing permits for Mount Kinabalu are limited per day and tied to a bed in the hut on the mountain. In the dry season they can be gone two to three months ahead; around Chinese New Year and mid-year school holidays, longer. If the climb is the reason for the trip, book it first and build the hotels around the date. We do the permit, the guide and the hotels as one booking so they line up.

The islands

Gaya Island Resort and Bunga Raya have a few dozen villas each, and the specific villa types (plunge pool, sea-facing) go first. Manukan has more rooms and is easier at short notice. Boat transfers need pre-booking regardless, so the resorts want to hear from you a week ahead at minimum.

The weather angle

The west coast is at its driest from roughly February to April and wettest from October to January. Rain rarely stops a city trip but it does cancel island boats and clouds the mountain. If you're flexible, March and April give good odds of dry days with lower rates than the year-end.

When last-minute works

Outside the dates above, the city has more rooms than it fills. Midweek in March, June or September you can turn up and choose. Rates don't move dramatically in KK the way they do in Bali or Bangkok; the difference between booking early and late is usually availability, not price.
